|
|
Hi everybody,
I gave my one-year old puppy Advantix when my vet switched from Advantage flea treatment. I believe he suffered a bad reaction. He started twitching every few minutes and was lethargic and itchy. I took him to the vet the next day to make sure he was OK. They really didn't do anything. Now, five days later, he is still twitching and seems irritated.
I was just wondering if any other toy poodle owners have ever used advantix and what kind of reaction your dogs had. I'm sick with worry thinking I have harmed my puppy..... |

I've never tried Advantix, so can't help you there. If your vet thought nothing of it, I really don't know what to say, unless you wanted to go get a second opinion. What might help is some children's Benedryl (not sure about the dosage right know though...) for itching, we've used it for years now. Also, if your not going to be useing Advantix anymore, I recommend comfortis. We've been using it for a while, and really like it. _________________

My toy poo kept me up all night long after applying Advantix. Itching every other minute. I felt aweful for her (and me, no sleep) I gave her a bath first thing in the morning, that helped.
I also use Comfortis. It works and no messy grease spots along her back. |

Might be coincidence-----Mine had reaction too---vet says it is the moxidectin that kills the worms or its vehicle that makes it absorb fast------thats the different ingredient (either or). Your flea advantage was just imadocloprid and it had a slow time release vehicle absorption (thats why it leaves residue).
If your pet licked smear site she could get deathly ill-it warns not to let them lick it 2 hrs I think.
Mine was lethargic, itchy, nauseaous, and quit eating/lost weight and had some shakeys--which is a reaction listed on that insert.
The next time or two I tried it same thing happened--but I scrubbed it off fast within hour or so and it helped drastically last time and havent used it since on her.The big oily dog has no problem though (different bred) or we dont notice as shes not inside with us (with a trainer).
Yes, Bath helps keep skin from absorbing more---the pamphlet in the pack says it takes 1-21 days to reach max blood serum levels of this so thats why reaction times can last a while---keep bathing that spot with soap often.
Their site for that bayer is www.petparents.com to read more about the difference between advantix and advantage----hope it helps.
Also note that moxidectin is the same chemical used in the 6 month injection capsule for heartworms---google that too---it was pulled for a safety study a few years after folks did not know if it was causing reactions or if shots were and is back out with caution---I used it on two . It requires liver kidney test now-bloodwork. |

not sure I agree with all the above. If it takes up to 21 days to reach maxium then 9 days later they are due for another one since it is used every 30 days. So Iwould think at day 21 it would be losing his potency
To keep on washing the same spot where it is given seems fruitless to me ..Since once the spot is washed with with soap and water , it wouldnt be on the skin anymore, .........in my reasoning anyway
As for being sure they dont lick it, mine says to use on the top of their neck, at base of head and there is no way they can lick that area, SO no no need to watch and be sure they dont lick it.They cant reach it
Now I have 2 dogs so I do watch them for awhile to make sure one doesnt lick the other dogs
area I applied it.. My flea product says when it dries it is Ok to bath them since it is absorbed into the skin then the blood |

-good points to all-
but remember moxidectin is just the heartworm/worm drug (the PLUS in advantage PLUS) so it doesnt have to stay in the dog 30 days to do its job of killing microfilaria once every 30 days as they accumulate. That prevents adults in heart. But yes the flea stuff should stay effective about 30 days on all new flea infestations and does it seems (imadocloprid).
The shampooing repeatedly is just several vets ideas from 3 counties (for any monthly swipe adverse reaction) that seemed to help and i can't say why or if
-but it does say on sheet:
"Shampooing 90 minutes after treatment does not reduce the effectiveness of advantage multi for dogs in the prevention of heartworm disease. Shampooing or water immersion 4 days after treatment will not reduce the effectiveness of advantage multi for dogs in the treatment of flea infestations. However, shampooing as often as once weekly may reduce the effectiveness of the product against fleas."
"Laboratory Effectiveness studies: one dog in laboratory effectiveness study experienced
weakness, depression, and unsteadiness between 6 to 9 days after application with advantage plus for dogs. The signs resolved without intervention by day 10 post-application. The signs in this dog may have been related to peak serum levels of moxidectin, which vary between dogs, and occur between 1 and 21 days after application of Advantage multi for dogs."
it's a great product if your pet tolerates it ok--our 'big dog' handler has maybe 40 on it in the kennel-no noticed effect.
Just look at the warning sheet --so you'll know if your symptoms do fit in with their warning for adverse reactions enough to consider it
-it says for a copy of this MSDS Material Data Safety Sheet (adverse warning sheet) or to report adverse reactions call Bayer Veterinary Services at 1-800-422-9874. For consumer questions call 1-800-255-6826. And I gave their website in last post. |

Hmmm--But mine had the problem with advantage PLUS and the posters problem was with advanTIX (advantage plus a vehicle and drug to kill ticks and repel insects and neutralize flea eggs)
wasted your time...didnt mean too. should have read better!! haha--but someone else in the background may have a problem with advantage or plus...maybe it helps them...or they can share
Most important, I hope the poo's better soon!!! |

In my thinking a heartworm prevention has to kill more than just 'once a month, since a dog can be biten more than once a month and days apart...by a infected mosquito
anyway too technical for me.
