I learned an expensive lesson last week. I "shared" some ribs with Blizzard and they tore up his little stomach. After a trip to the vet, he is in good condition again. Do Toy Poodles have a more sensitive g. i. tract than other breeds?

It's been a crazy week and probably not the best one in which to add a new dog to the family but that's just the way life goes sometimes.

For all who asked, ataxia is lack of coordination. My vet believes she sustained a neck injury during birth as all of her limbs are affected. She has had it since she arrived and it has not gotten any worse nor has it improved. She has full range of motion and is not in pain but the messages from her brain don’t tend to travel down to her legs and feet that well many times. She doesn’t jump more of a raising of her front legs a bit, her rear legs don’t leave the ground. She doesn’t wag her tail and in this case, her having a stubby tail is good as there may have been hygiene issues otherwise. I have only seen her sit about five times. She walks but can stumble easily. She runs but those stumbles turn into her completely falling over due to momentum. It doesn’t take much to make her off balanced and take her off her feet. Any quick reactive movements she makes, especially sideways ones, usually make her fall. When she falls, it will take her a few frantic flails to get back up again. She really can never go for a walk. Being just two pounds, just a slight leash tension is enough to tip her over. Well, she could go for a walk if I wanted to force her to do it and wouldn’t feel badly about making her fall down a hundred times. At that point though, it’s not even a walk, it’s me taking a few steps, she falls over and I wait for her to get back up and then take a few steps more, she falls over….well, you get the idea. Stress will make her ataxia worse, I am assuming because she’s tense and putting more pressure onto the neck injury. Grooming her is a challenge as she’s stressed and it’s difficult for her to stand on the grooming table. Her rear legs tend to go stiff and then “scissor”, so she gets groomed lying down. This works out fine for now since I’ve not had the heart to cut her puppy hair. When it gets to that point, I’ll have to break down the groom into a few sessions so she’ll be able to stand.

Here’s a photo of her stumbling from stepping over the garden hose:

Here she is a few steps later, still off balance from the stumble:

If you take a look at the very first image of this post, you can see her front left paw is a bit buckled under her.

She seems to be a bit aware of her limitations. She obviously doesn’t try to jump onto or off of anything. She is also very wary on any slopes. Don’t feel sorry for her though, she’s a sweet, happy little thing that just loves to play. She doesn’t let falling down stop her one bit, she’s just eager to get back up and keep going. When adding a second dog however, I definitely didn’t want a dominant one that would jump on her when she’s down. The one thing she has complete control over is her head and if she was being dominated by a puppy that didn’t realize she couldn’t get up, I didn’t want her to start biting. I also wanted one similar in size to she, again so she wouldn’t be physically dominated. It was quite a challenge, especially since she’s so small.

I’ve been looking at poodle puppies for so many months now- I never stopped even after Twinkle arrived. I had contacted a local breeder that had an ad for a little cream male the same size as Twinkle, but she decided to keep him in the end- and I understand, I do the same with the hamsters! She had a Cream female that was a little bit larger but she had a more dominant temperament. She had told me that she usually posts ads on PuppyFind and that I could watch for new pups there. I had expressed that I had come across PuppyFind when looking for Twinkle but had thought it was a broker site similar to so many others out there. She explained to me that it’s not. It’s a listing site for breeders. At some point, someone has to pay. A breeder can list their pups for free but anyone wanting to contact them or see photos needs to pay for a subscription. Alternately, a breeder can pay to post a litter and then anyone can see the photos and contact information. Most breeders will pay the fee. The woman I talked to said it wasn’t that much of a fee. I started looking at PuppyFind as well as all the other sites, ads and classifieds. I have to say that PuppyFind is pretty nice! Many of the websites I was looking at also had their pups listed on PuppyFind. Of course, as with anything, there is a wide range of breeders on there and an obvious scam or two, you need to use the same selection methods as you would with any breeder. One thing I appreciated with PuppyFind is that buyers can leave a review about a breeder. I didn’t come across any bad reviews but it’s nice to see several people happy with the previous puppies they received from a particular breeder.

So I came across this puppy on PuppyFind and just couldn’t get over her markings. I called the breeder and the temperament sounded like a good match and she was a similar size to Twinkle. She weighed a bit more but not much taller. Everything just happened so fast. I had started communicating with the breeder Saturday night and then arranged to call her the following day. On Sunday, I saw that the pup was marked as “pending” on PuppyFind- which I had thought was a bit presumptuous . When I called her later that morning, she said that the woman that had reserved her months ago but then couldn’t get her due to health reasons had just contacted her that morning to get her again. The other woman is actually a breeder and they’re doing a dog exchange. The breeder informed the other woman that I’d inquired about her and her response was, if you can sell her, then sell her. So it’s great that I was being given first choice but the pressure was on for me to make a decision that day. By 8:30 that night, I decided to go for it. Surprisingly, my husband didn’t give much of a fight. Really, I think he loved her color too and Twinkle has been so unlike what he was expecting. On Monday, the flight was booked and she got her health certificate from the vet and on Tuesday at 11pm she arrived in Cleveland- how is that for fast?!

This breeder has been so good with communicating, e-mailing and calling. She’s followed up, sent a ton of photos, paperwork arrived before the weekend. She was patient with all my questions while I was deciding and took any photos I requested immediately. Definitely different than my experience with Twinkle’s breeder. I’m not saying that she’s got show quality poodles but that’s not what I was after.

Like many of you, I did question the puppy’s coat and color and have done a little bit of research. First her color. I received photos from her breeder as she grew from birth. She looks very much like a merle but I know she wasn't merle as merles are born with their merle color and markings and this pup was born a Black and White Parti and then the color began to grow in at few weeks of age. This would be similar to a Dalmatian where they’re born white and then the spots grow in. This is due to a dominant ticking gene. Her ticking is dense enough to give her a roan effect (roan looks to be just a large amount of ticking and not a separate gene). Ticking is not very known in poodles and the photos I’ve found of the partis with ticking don’t have as much as she does. Ticking seems to be more common in Cocker Spaniels and just this weekend I saw a Shih Tzu being groomed at Petco that had very similar color and markings, however I can’t find it as being in the Shih Tzu breed either. The only comments that I’ve found regarding ticking in the poodles is that it should be selected against as it makes the white of a Parti “muddy”. So who knows where her ticking came from. I have photos of her mother and father, the ticking came from her mother. I have photos of her maternal grandparents and her mother got the ticking from her mother (so it been passed down the maternal line). If the ticking was introduced from another breed, then it happened at least a generation beyond the maternal grandmother as the maternal grandmother has a very poodle coat and appearance. If it happened just one generation out from that, then that would make this pup at least 15/16ths poodle- and that’s assuming the ticking was introduced. It could easily have been there for many, many generations. It can be carried by solid dogs and may only mildly tick some partis- it all goes down to the selection of polygenes and that’s a tricky thing, especially at the hands of hobby breeders, and the majority don't understand genetics.

Here she is at three days old with her sister- completely different than she is now!:

Here she is at three weeks, you can see the ticking has started growing in:

Five weeks old:

Seven weeks old:

Nine weeks old:

Twelve weeks old:

Fourteen weeks old:

Here's a link for information on ticking:
Dog Coat Color Genetics- Ticking

Then there’s her coat. Her parents definitely have poodle curls and her hair isn’t completely straight, it’s fairly wavy though it’s hard to judge since her hair has been cut so short. She has curls on her tail, rump and parts of her legs and it’s more curly than Twinkle’s. Twinkle doesn’t really have curly hair, it’s more “crimped”- she only has one small spot on her head that has a few curls. Both are still five months old though so they’re too young to judge coat yet as it’s not their adult coat.

Here's a close-up of her coat:

Here’s her mother:

and father:

Here’s her maternal grandmother:

(you can see her ticking on her legs)

and her maternal grandfather:

(the breeder's husband says that she looks like her grandfather)

She arrived Tuesday night just fine and got a half hour of playing in with Twinkle before we headed to bed. She kept her crate clean through the night and started the next day a bit more uncertain than the night before. I found a flea on her that morning so I unfortunately gave her a flea bath and it was a bit too much for her and she didn’t want to have anything to do with me after that. There’s no way that could happen though so I had to leash train her and then teach her to “come”- it was a long day for the poor little girl but she made it through just wonderfully. She learned very fast and has a fairly reliable come. She is more timid than Twinkle and when she’s feeling scared, the “come” is more flighted and not as reliable, if that makes sense.

She’s been terrific when playing with Twinkle, she’s never wrestled with Twinkle when she’s down and is submissive to Twinkle- even more excellent. She’s only had four accidents since she arrived, the first being the first night. She hasn’t had an accident since I caught her in the act and corrected her but that’s probably more her getting onto our schedule. She was pretty good getting groomed- grooming her face and neck was a dream but I don’t think her feet had ever been clipped before, only scissored, so that was harder for her. She jumps on and off the couch with ease and can go up and down the outdoor steps. She has climbed the flight of steps going upstairs but won’t go down. She gets to the top and then cries to be rescued. She’s not gone up the steps since I corrected her for it, even with me encouraging her, so she make think they’re off limits. I’m still teaching her to relax in a purse, on her dog bed on my desk and in the tote I take the dogs in when I go down to breed the hamsters. She’s learned to stay put but she’s not nearly as relaxed about it as Twinkle. I’m sure that will come as she gets used to the routine and thankfully Twinkle will be there as an example.

The biggest question now is her name right?! Well, my husband took a bit of the lead on this one (he must really like her as he wanted nothing to do with naming Twinkle) and we’ve named her “Stormie”. I was hoping for something along the lines of star, midnight sky or the moon as that would really go with her coloring and "match" Twinkle but none of them seemed to fit so Stormie it is! She was 46 oz when she arrived though has dropped 4 oz (I've switched her to raw). She is 6 1/2 inches tall and 8 1/2 inches long measured from the back of her neck to the base of her tail. She's pretty much the same height as Twinkle (she's 5 7/8 inches tall) but longer so a pretty good match for size. And now for some photos!!

First day:

You can see Twinkle's stumbled a bit in this one:

Third day here:

Romping around on her fourth day here:

In this photo Twinkle was chasing Stormie and Stormie turned to the right and that made Twinkle fall over

Then these last ones were all taken yesterday, after she was groomed. We took her to the Air Show and she did great! She wasn't afraid of the jets at all and was happy to stay with us on the picnic blanket:

Then photos of the two of them after the show since they still looked nice!

Hope you didn't mind the novel of a post and all the photos but that's what happens when I wait a week to introduce a new pup! Now I just need to update my signature and avatar!
Unscented baby wipes are a necessity in our cars and house now lol. Poodles and our niece. =)

Our girls don't get car sick thankfully. They go on all kinds of car rides. Even long ones when we drive up to our brother's house in the hill country. =) But we are ready for that just in case.

Not planning on hotels but I have a list of them that allow pets from here to WY along our planned route just in case. Both our parents are coming so we'll have shift driving and plan on stopping at our dad's parents first for a night or two and then going on and on the way back stopping again. =) It's kind of nice to have them about half way from each other lol.

Any tips on introducing them to strange dogs in the other dog's truff? I am a bit worried about both dogs (the chi especially since we've been bit by him) since they aren't used to other small dogs. I ordered a nice pen for the girls to keep them safe just in case.

Bella...Is also very hard to train to do anything she doesn't want to do...She is a little neurotic=won't let me approach from the back of her...she will put her face & body in front of me all the time...I do try to get lower down to her to get her to take her treat...she will sit for me & that is all. She will walk around me, but I can't grab her collar at any time.
I have to sit in my lounge chair where she'll jump onto my stomach 90% of the time..or she'll go to the bathroom with me & I can close the door to capture her. At the door for our Walkee of 10-15 minutes (walking around the house 2x) it is so hard to get her leached...she'll sit & stay for a second until I try to get the leach on her then she'll only bark at me and move away though I say Walkee Out...that is when I go to the bathroom to catch her. She goes out with our larger dog at least 3 or 4x a day to the dog pen (large area in the backyard)..she can run or do her business...have been leaving them out 10 or so minutes at a time. I change out her toys everyday so that she has old/new ones...she does love those rawhide strips..so I have at least 2 on the floor at all times & got her the Kong which I fill with her milk bones & a tiny bit of sugar free peanut butter. By the late afternoon she is mellowed out & stops almost all of the chasing of the cat, & has less energy....she stays under the couch..until I walk into the kitchen..then she comes & sits. Trying the training of: give me your paw...(she moves away)....she only will sit for me. Sitting at the door & staying so I can leach her...(she moves away in a 1/2 minute)...trying "Come Here"....she moves away from me. I get her to do her business for 1/2 hr or so after she eats she goes out side to the dog pen, & that seems to work was doing it in the house. I would appreciate any other hints to get her to be more responsive...like maybe I need to get her different treats that will be more exciting for her to want to do what I ask?
I don't know of any other training to try with her. Thanks for all your help..Lil

Aww poor Gigi, don't feel bad, I've done it once. Maybe the blade is just too short for her, her skin may be too sensitive for it, try a blade or two up (longer) next time and see what happens. If the way you do it works, don't do it the other way, it doesn't really matter which way you do it as long as you're not hurting the dog, and you're getting the look you want... Also check to see your blade isn't blunt, or too hot, that can cause irritation/burn.

Don't worry, just put ointment on it and she'll be okay

I just wanted to add.I know how it is when you know you want something really bad.But life can kick you down.Im not going to try and change your mind, but i want to tell you what happened to me!

I brought Rafaello,he is now 15 months old and is a lovely black male toy poodle.Im a grown up and we made a family decision.I have a stable home and the finances to cope.

Rafaello was a sick puppy. He was infected with Distemper when he arrived to my home.We spent over 2000 us dollars in treatment in his first few months of life!!!!He was worth every penny or dime but we had the money to pay!!!!

If you buy a puppy who turns out to have problems or is sick,if you buy a puppy against the wishes of your father........who is gonna pay the vets bills?????

And dont think its not going to happen to you......fatal mistake!!!!

Why not talk to your dad and start saving you own money and show him how hard you will work to have a puppy.........im sure he will accept!

Also Flower bear had a good point ....if you dont want to hear opinions dont post on a forum.

I sincerely wish you all the best.Good luck!
_________________
Rafaello aged 1 year and three months......one year on from Distemper.

I seriously doubt your level of maturity.

I believe kat was merely trying to get you to do things the proper way. Seek parents approval.

Getting a dog without your father's approval is a very childish method of getting what you want. In your first post, you already mentioned I WANT a toy poodle. Its you want. Are you able to commit to this "want" for the next twenty years?

If you dad does not allow the dog in the house, do you have a place for the dog to stay? Do you have the patience with toilet training, dealing with nipping and all the other pranks puppies can and WILL do? Are you able to pay for all the food and medical expenses a dog would require? And are you able to pay your father for the FURNITURE your puppy may destroy? Who will take care of the puppy when you go to school? Are you able to 100% stay home for the next twenty years? No school camps, no trips? If you are sending your dog to a hotel, who will pay for it?

There's still a longer list of questions you should be asking yourself before you get a dog. If any of these things mentioned above, you require parental assistance, you should be getting approval before trying to get one.

Btw, if you cannot listen to comments, good or bad, I suggest you write in a diary instead. Nobody will point out what you dont wanna hear there.

Twice now I have got a spot on GiGi face a bit of razor burn. I even had my older son help hold her..and was an hour after 25mg of benadryl. If I do the cheeks like videos show..from ear toward mouth..tight...that is when she gets it. If I go from mid snout downward..she doesnt. Then for bottom lip I just gently run edge of clipper. Is it wrong to do it differently than the video cause I cried and felt so bad. She wouldnt let me touch her feet much either. My little clipper has died..wont hold a charge so maybe i just need to get another one. What small trimmers./clippers do you suggest>

Unscented baby wipes for their paws and faces. I keep one in my truck at all times just incase they get sick. My maltapoo (Teddy) gets car sick even short rides. You may want to ask your vet what you could give them if it should happen. Otherwise..sounds like you have it made. If planning on using hotels at all..might want to check on who is pet friendly

I agree with Umaysmommy. THis is a very large commitment that you really have to plan for.
My dad was a very strict parent as I grew up. I had to do what you are planning to do. Mine was a weird lizard . While he never even got to where he liked it, he fell silent about it. About the same time my mom got her chocolate poodle..miniture. She was named Geegee too. Even though she was my moms, we all adored her. She was just the sweetest thing but had my dad been dead set against a dog..the first few days would of been hell on earth.
He may agree to it if you show him all your reasons..main one being to learn complete commitment to another being for all their needs...so would teach you responsibility. You will get exercise playing with the furbaby. Do you have a way to pay for your pets food, dr bills? If depending on mom...I suggest to depend on her to join in the chat. You may be surprised that you chatting to your dad in a mature responsible manner, may get you a deserved yes. Give him a chance..if its still no...wait awhile and try it again..and do a puppy dog eyes lol..that usually works with dads.

I am very sad to inform everyone that my little Rudy has lost his battle of 3 years with immune mediated thrombocytopenia (IMT). His little body just could not handle all the medication that he was on and and he gave me the look that it was time to say good bye.

Subject: Spam, and SEO promoters
Hi Kat, Joe, Theresa,

I know you guys are upset about the spam, and please rest assure that Joe and I are doing all we can to fight them.

Spam has been around since the beginning of times (Internet times anyway) and is SEO oriented, that is, building links to sites, to promote them. This linking is the goal of the spam we suffer.
There always are new ways of fighting it, spammers usually are bots, that are simple programs that register and send "comments" to existing threads or create new threads.
Those programs can be neutralized including a special control, like the classic captcha, or the math question in the posting forms, those things are there to neutralize automatic posting, and therefor spamming.

The problem arises again, when the posting is done by real people, that people is really browsing and posting, and therefore, they can include the captcha, the math question and any other "anti-bot" technic we might include.

With real people spam, what is left for us is:
a) Disallow links in the signatures/posts (people still might post the URL for copy&paste, but it won't be clickable)
b) Human revision, like what we are doing right now, you guys, Joe or anyone else can write to me directly, with the subject spam, possible spam, check this out, or whatever you may like, and including the URL of the thread/post; I'll as soon as I can check what is sent, and remove the spam messages, threads, even ban the user, block the IP, and everything I can do to stop that person/bot/registrant email domain/etc from spam again in our boards.

Both methods have pros and cons, a) is more discouraging for human spammers, but removes functionality we all use in our messages. b) is more flexible, not removing any functionality from the board, but requires both patience from users that might see the spam, and needs to report it, and work from me, to remove it.

These are the options I see, and of course am open to discuss any other options you'd like to propose.

I'm sorry I cant be more involved in the day to day life in the boards, but as Joe said, have plenty on my hands in the job and offline with the family, so I rely on him and everyone in the community to be in the loop and get notices about anything you think I should review in the boards.

Best!

We'll be going on a trip at the end of the month up through Kansas and then stopping in WY at the end of the month to see our grandparents and family. Our mom hasn't seen her family in about three years face to face so it will be nice. Is there anything you guys could suggest for us to bring? Our dad's parents have a little chi (of the nippy untrained variety unfortunately...) and our mom's mom has a dachshund that is paper trained and mostly trained but has never been around little dogs her own size, only larger shepherds and cats (which she chases...). We are already going to bring a pen (the folding kind with a bottom) which I just ordered for the trip, their litter box of course, toys, warmer clothes and jackets, leashes and harnesses, and all the other necessaries (ie water and food dishes, food, puppy pads and what not). Did we miss anything? We'll be bringing their shot records of course also. Thanks guys.

I agree with the above. My father was very angry when I brought both puppies home and they were rescues. It caused a rift between us for a little while and I pay all my own bills and for both dogs and all the other animals in the house and am not completely dependent on them, but he was still mad. Eventually he eased up and fell in love but that is only because I pay for them not him, we never depend on our parents to pay their bills, never leave them home with our parents to go out and have fun, if we want to go out we bring them with us. Our mom babysits them once in a great while but besides that they are very much like our own little babies. It's a big step and if our father was still upset with me, my sister and our mom I don't think we'd still have them. Dogs are much happier in a family where everyone loves them. They can sense if someone is angry or doesn't like them.

Maybe waiting for dad to come back would be best? Prove to him that you are responsible and ready to have your own dog, maybe do chores or extra chores if you already have them. Let him know you had a chance to go behind his back and get a puppy but you didn't. Believe me this will help you out in proving how mature and responsible you are. A lot more than sneaking behind his back. That is a disaster waiting to happen. What would happen if he not only go mad at you but your mother as well? Think about how that would make your mom feel?

Parents can do things that they would later regret if they feel like you went behind their backs to do something they previously told you no to. This could be any number of things. No allowance, no going out, grounding you, no phone use...and getting rid of the puppy you wanted and love.

Honestly I wouldn't believe them if they claim not to get their dogs from puppy mills...I mean look at PetLand. They claim the same thing. No breeder I know of would sell their litters to a pet store since it takes away their control over who gets their puppies. Be very careful when picking your puppy. It's very worth a small drive to get a good breeder. A good breeder will treat their dogs and puppies right and you'll end up with a better socialized puppy and best of all support from the breeder for all those questions you'll have later on.

Poodle Behaviour and Training :: RE: Chewing Everything In Sight!

Well first off I don't think muzzling will help her problem at all, only mask it. Without the muzzle she will chew still unless trained not to. Chewing is a very natural behavior for all dogs. It's something they do. Normally it is worse when they are teething or bored. Some dogs also just chew.

Trinity has the same problem but is it slowly being broken/retrained out of the habit. She chews shoes, cords and on the corners of dressers/desks mainly. We have been training her using redirection. I'll snap a loud sharp "no" at her and clap my hands once sharply. This distracts her. Then I'll squeak a toy and toss it to her. If she pounces it I coo and praise her then play with her for a few minutes.

If all else fails we've found bitter yuck and bitter apple spray to be pretty effective. As well as keeping things we don't want chewed up well out of poodle reach.

Personally I look at it this way:

When Trinity chewed up one of my favorite pairs of sandals it is my fault. I left them where she could get them. If I don't want something to be chewed I keep it put up in my closet or on the desk or on a shelf out of puppy reach.

Remember it just takes time. =) Keep up with training and you'll be rewarded in the end.
Our mom is a lot happier since our rooms and the house is kept very clean because of this.
